KAREN GARNAAS, M.D.
Clinical Assistant Professor

Karen Garnaas is Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Clinical Neuroscience, University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences and Staff Neurologist at MeritCare Neuroscience Clinic in Fargo, North Dakota. She received her medical degree from the Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Garnaas completed her Adult Neurology Residency at the University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she also served as Chief Neurology Resident. She then received additional fellowship training in Clinical Neurophysiology/EMG at the Mayo Clinic, learning specialized techniques in NCS/EMG; single fiber EMG; intraoperative monitoring, evoked potentials, EEG and Botulinum injections for focal dystonias, hemifacial spasm and spasticity. She joined MeritCare Neuroscience in 1995. Dr Garnaas’ special interests include the diagnosis and treatment of multiple sclerosis, dystonias, and neuromuscular conditions such as polyneuropathies, myasthenia gravis, myopathies, muscular dystrophies and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. She also has subspecialty training in clinical neurophysiology / EMG which aids in the evaluation of neuromuscular problems. Dr. Garnaas is actively involved in teaching medical students and residents.
